Karriem Riggins: "Fix Ya Face!"

Thursday, July 30, 2009

When Dilla passed in February of '06, he still had not finished The Shining. Being a confidant, collaborator, and fellow Detroit boy, The multi talented musician named Karriem Riggins took helm of the project and completed The Shining in honor of his fallen brethren.

The Son of a jazz musician, Riggins is one of the few people who can seamlessly cross the lines of Hip Hop and modern Jazz music. An accomplished drummer who has worked with some of my favorite musicians of that genre; Boby Hutcherson, Donald Byrd, and Roy Hardgrove (look up the pH factor, dope jazz album with appearances by Common and Erykah Badu).

On the other end of this spectrum, Riggins has produced some FIYERRR tracks for folks like Talib, Erykah, and Common. And to top off all this he has managed to team up with Madlib to form the Supreme Team/ Jahari Masamba Unit. I'm sure most people can just imagine what that sounds like! There are a couple videos of them performing in Europe on Youtube if you want to see some of that dopeness.

Here's a few videos of Karriem getting down during his Virtuoso Experience Tour, which featured DJ Dummy and the legendary Pete Rock doing some opening DJ sets in which they do some music melding. It was pretty lame this tour only had like 4 real dates, but anyone who was there got to witness some of the realest music out right now.
